Family Trees

TIA Home Design

The unusual diamond shape of this West Kowloon apartment made it necessary to demolish the all walls except one, creating a more spacious and functional layout.

The floor plan of the 1,000 square foot home at Island Harbourview provided immediate inspiration for the organic look of the three supporting pillars in the living area. Clad in oak wood, the pillars act like “trees” forming roots onto the oak floor and continuing into infinity, accentuated by ceiling mirrors installed in plastic for safety. One of the “trees” includes a light box that helps to enhance the sense of height and includes room for travel souvenieers and trophies.

The “trees” also visually enlarge the space, while creating suspense for the visitor upon entering, as not everything is immediately revealed. The open-plan kitchen has been partially concealed. It features contrasting white décor and a custom-made table.

While these design elements capture the attention, the television has been set to one side so does it not detract from the overall design of the room.

Knocking down all of the walls, except for the guest toilet wall, also improved the directional flow of the space. Shoes are stored in a hidden cupboard next to the dining table, while toys are concealed behind the television.

Storage is also an important component of the main bedroom that features a hydraulic bed. The bed has been placed so that the headboard blocks the view of other buildings looking into the room.

The apartment also features a children’s room and separate study or makeup area. On one wall a window divides these two rooms to allow parents to check on their children. A blind can be drawn when privacy is needed.

In keeping with the rest of the décor, the bathroom has been tiled in simple white with a grey marble-patterned wall.
