“Layering uses bamboo and rattan to form a vertical installation that merges life experience, architectural form, and sustainability into a layered structure readable from multiple perspectives.”

Design & Innovation Technology Expo 2015 — Layering
Organised by HKTDC, supported by the Hong Kong Interior Design Association

Layering is a sculptural installation created around the concept of growth and accumulated experience, presented at the Design & Innovation Technology Expo 2015. Taking the vertical form of a Christmas tree as a metaphor, the work expresses how people develop different layers over time, just as architecture evolves through stratification and changing forms.

The installation rises through stacked circular and mesh-like platforms, forming a rhythmic vertical structure. Viewed from different angles, the piece reveals shifting silhouettes and perspectives; seen from different heights, it generates distinct horizontal visual experiences. These changing viewpoints reflect the idea of “layering” as both a spatial condition and a metaphor for human life.

Constructed primarily from bamboo and rattan, the piece explores the use of locally distinctive materials from Hong Kong to form the entire structure. The material choice carries environmental significance while embedding cultural identity into the design, allowing the work to communicate nature, craftsmanship, and urban character at once.

Through a restrained yet poetic structural language, Layering unites architecture, personal growth, and sustainable materials into a vertical city-like form that can be read, experienced, and reinterpreted from multiple perspectives.
