“Sculptor of Light transforms illumination into a sculptural language through curved apertures and mirror-coated carbon fibre, inviting people to rethink the future relationship between light, space, and time.”
The 4th Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition by HKTDC — “Sculptor of Light”
Sculptor of Light is a unique, multi-functional mood lamp that can be placed on the floor or suspended as a pendant light. With a diameter of approximately 430 mm, the lamp is constructed from carbon fibre with a mirror-coated finish, reflecting a balance between practicality and aesthetic refinement in interior design.
Its abstract curved form features precisely cut slots that allow LED light to pass through, creating controlled beams and layered light effects. Through the interplay of light and shadow, the lamp enables users to shape mood and atmosphere, transforming surrounding surfaces into a canvas of illumination.
The form is conceived as a physical metaphor of light as sculpture. Light flows across curved surfaces and through narrow apertures, encouraging people to rethink their own sense of space and time. The concept was inspired by Japanese architect Tadao Ando’s early principle that regards walls as the “sculpture of light,” translating an architectural philosophy into a tactile, movable product.
Lighting is not merely a functional element, but an integral part of spatial storytelling and emotional experience. Sculptor of Light responds to the competition theme “Lighting the Future” by exploring how future lighting can balance technology, sensibility, and spatial atmosphere.
The design was awarded Second Runner-up in the Open Group of the 4th Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition in 2010. It also received a Certificate of Excellence in Professional Product Design at the Perspective Awards 2011.
