“Urban Framework transforms Hong Kong’s skyline into a reversible, dual-purpose object that unites a photo frame, paper holder, and sculptural paper city into one functional artwork.”
HKTDC “Lifestyle with Paper” — IDT Expo 2012: Urban Framework
Urban Framework is a dual-purpose houseware piece created with both artistic expression and practicality in mind. Exhibited at HKTDC’s “Lifestyle with Paper” showcase, the design transforms the urban skyline of Hong Kong into a sculptural, functional object.
One side of the piece serves as a photo frame with defined borders, suitable for displaying photographs or fossil specimens. The other side captures an upbeat three-dimensional cityscape of Hong Kong, formed by layered architectural blocks that create a rhythmic and sculptural silhouette. The jutting building forms cleverly double as the structural support of the photo frame; when the cityscape side takes centre stage, the frame side naturally becomes a firm base that can be laid flat on a surface or mounted on a wall.
The design’s ingenuity lies in its seamless functional transformation. The gaps between the protruding buildings are not merely visual elements but introduce another layer of utility, functioning as a playful paper holder. This adds a tactile, everyday dimension to the sculptural object.
Responding to the theme “Lifestyle with Paper,” Urban Framework explores how paper can move beyond flat surfaces into spatial construction, occupying a hybrid role as an art piece, a display frame, and a practical household object within daily life.
